How Long Is the Stock Market Open Each Day?
Regular Trading Hours
The US stock market is open for 6 hours and 30 minutes each trading day. Regular hours run from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.
That might seem short compared to a regular workday, but a lot happens in those 6.5 hours. Billions of dollars change hands every single day on the NYSE and NASDAQ.
Total Hours Including Extended Trading
If you count pre-market and after-hours trading, the total window is much longer:
- Pre-market: 4:00 AM – 9:30 AM ET (5.5 hours)
- Regular: 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM ET (6.5 hours)
- After-hours: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM ET (4 hours)
That's a total of 16 hours where you could technically trade US stocks on a given day. But the vast majority of trading activity happens during regular hours.
How Many Trading Days Per Year?
The US stock market is open about 252 trading days per year. That's 365 days minus weekends (104 days) minus about 9 market holidays.
So in total, the regular US stock market is open for roughly 1,638 hours per year (252 days × 6.5 hours).
